Planning and estimates

When should I contact Humboldt?

Contact Humboldt as soon as you know your likely dates. If your move is close, share that when you get in touch so the team can check availability and priorities. Short notice does not guarantee same-day service.

How long does an estimate take?

The time needed depends on the size of the shipment, property access and services involved. Have your addresses, preferred dates and an outline of your belongings ready so the team can explain the estimate process for your move.

What should I have ready?

Include everything you intend to move, plus stairs, parking, elevators, packing needs and any storage gap. Use the Moving Checklist to organize the remaining preparations.

Packing and belongings

Can Humboldt pack and unpack for me?

Yes. Packing and unpacking are available as selected services. The amount of work and timing depend on your belongings and the scope you choose. Explore packing help and materials.

Can I pack my own boxes?

Yes. Use sound cartons, suitable cushioning and clear labels. For interstate moves, packing your own goods can make a damage claim harder to establish, but it is not an automatic exclusion whenever the carton looks undamaged. Review the applicable terms and document valuable or fragile items.

Can clothes stay in drawers?

Light clothing may be suitable, depending on the furniture and how it will be handled. Remove valuables, breakables and anything that could spill, and avoid overloading drawers. Check the preparation for the particular piece before leaving it filled.

Which items need special attention before packing?

Flag fuels, propane cylinders, chemicals, ammunition and powered equipment before packing begins. Do not conceal hazardous materials in a carton. Acceptance and preparation depend on the item and route; obtain instructions before handling them. Keep essential medication and personal documents accessible.

Are all liquids, food, plants or high-value belongings prohibited?

No single blanket list fits every shipment. Perishables, plants, alcohol, firearms and valuable collections require advance review for transport restrictions, destination rules or special arrangements. Tell the team what you have rather than assuming it can travel. See the item-specific planning guide.

Can my vehicle travel with my household belongings?

Vehicle transport needs a separate discussion about the route, vehicle and available arrangements. Do not assume it will share the household trailer or container, or that it is included in the moving estimate. It is not part of a regular local move.

Delivery and protection

What are my responsibilities on moving day?

Be available for questions, keep essentials and valuables separate, and review the inventory and applicable paperwork with the team. Complete a final walkthrough and confirm destination access and delivery contacts.

How are my belongings protected against loss or damage?

Valuation sets the mover’s liability; it is not an insurance policy. For interstate household moves, federal options include Full Value Protection and Released Value. Released Value provides limited protection of 60 cents per pound per article, not replacement cost. In-state rules differ: do not assume that figure applies to every local move. Review your selected option, limits and any separate insurance.

See FMCSA’s interstate liability guidance and California’s consumer information.

What should I do when my belongings arrive?

Show the team where items belong, check the delivery against the inventory and raise any concerns you notice. Keep your documents and ask for the claims contact and applicable reporting requirements rather than relying on a generic deadline.
